Why Ayurvedic Herbs Work for Hair

Ayurveda has been around for over 5,000 years. Long before there were laboratories and clinical trials, people in India were using plants to grow thicker, stronger, longer hair. And the wild thing is, modern science is now confirming what our ancestors already knew.

These are not old wives’ tales. Several Ayurvedic herbs have been studied in peer-reviewed research and shown to genuinely stimulate hair growth, reduce hair fall, and improve scalp health. Here are 7 that we swear by (and actually use in our products).

1. Bhringraj

Known as the “King of Herbs” for hair, bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is the heavyweight champion of Ayurvedic hair care. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that bhringraj extract promoted hair growth more effectively than minoxidil, the most commonly prescribed hair growth drug.

Bhringraj works by stimulating hair follicle cells and extending the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. It also has a unique ability to support melanin production, which is why it is traditionally used to prevent premature greying.

You can use it as a powder mask mixed with yoghurt, or get its benefits through our Hair Growth Oil, which has bhringraj as one of its 15 herbs.

2. Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Amla is probably the most versatile ingredient in Ayurveda. One small amla fruit contains as much Vitamin C as 20 oranges. This massive antioxidant load protects hair follicles from free radical damage and keeps the scalp healthy.

But amla does something else that is really interesting. It has a high tannin content that helps strengthen the hair shaft from inside. People who use amla regularly notice their hair getting progressively thicker and shinier over a few months.

3. Hibiscus

The flowers and leaves of the hibiscus plant are packed with amino acids that nourish hair and promote growth. Hibiscus also helps balance scalp pH, which is crucial for reducing hair fall.

In traditional Indian households, hibiscus flowers were crushed and mixed with coconut oil as a pre-wash treatment. The flowers contain mucilage, a natural conditioning agent that leaves hair incredibly soft and manageable. It is nature’s conditioner.

4. Fenugreek (Methi)

Fenugreek seeds are rich in nicotinic acid and proteins that strengthen hair roots and rebuild damaged hair. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that fenugreek extract significantly reduced hair fall in participants over a 6 month period.

The simplest way to use fenugreek: soak seeds overnight, grind them into a paste, apply to your scalp for 30 minutes, and wash off. But if that sounds like too much work (we get it), our Hair Growth Oil has fenugreek infused right in.

5. Neem

Neem is the ultimate scalp cleanser. It is antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. If you deal with dandruff, itchy scalp, or any kind of scalp infection, neem is your best friend.

But neem does more than just fight problems. It improves blood circulation to the scalp, strengthens hair roots, and promotes faster growth. Our Anti-Dandruff Hair Oil uses neem as a primary ingredient, alongside vetiver, for targeted scalp treatment.

We also make Neem Wood Combs that give you the benefits of neem with every stroke through your hair.

6. Curry Leaves (Kadi Patta)

Most people throw curry leaves out of their food. Big mistake. Curry leaves are loaded with beta-carotene and proteins that reduce hair thinning and stimulate growth. They also contain antioxidants that fight free radical damage to hair follicles.

Curry leaves are particularly effective against premature greying. The beta-carotene and amino acids help restore and maintain the natural pigment in your hair. This is why curry leaf oil is a staple in South Indian hair care traditions.

7. Rosemary

While not traditionally Indian, rosemary has made its way into Ayurvedic practice because the results speak for themselves. A 2015 clinical trial found that rosemary essential oil was as effective as 2% minoxidil for treating androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), with fewer side effects.

Rosemary works by improving blood circulation to the scalp and stimulating cellular regeneration. This means more nutrients reaching your hair follicles and faster, healthier growth.

Better Together

Here is the thing about Ayurvedic herbs. They work well individually, but they work even better in combination. Each herb targets a different aspect of hair health, and when they are combined in the right proportions, the effects compound.

This is exactly why our Hair Growth Oil contains not just one or two, but 15 herbs. Bhringraj, amla, hibiscus, fenugreek, neem, curry leaves, rosemary, black cumin, indigo, jasmine, vetiver, castor, and more. Each one does its job, and together they cover everything from growth stimulation to dandruff control to premature greying prevention.

Nature has already figured out hair care. We just need to use what it gives us.
