Hair Concerns
Spotting greys in your 20s or 30s? Premature greying is increasingly common, and Ayurveda offers gentle ways to slow it and cover it beautifully.
Greying happens when hair follicles produce less melanin. Genetics play a role, but stress, nutrition and scalp health all influence how early it starts, and those you can work on.
Why hair greys early

- Nutrient gaps — low B12, iron, copper and protein.
- Chronic stress that accelerates melanin loss.
- Harsh chemicals and frequent chemical dyeing.
- Genetics — the biggest single factor.
- In Ayurveda, excess Pitta (heat) is linked to premature greying.
Natural remedies for premature greying
Bhringraj — the anti-grey herb
Traditionally used to preserve natural colour. Use as an oil massage or hair mask 2x a week.
Amla for melanin support
Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants; nourishes follicles and is a classic anti-greying remedy.
Henna for natural colour
Chemical-free way to cover greys with rich, conditioning colour, no ammonia or PPD.
Reduce Pitta & stress
Cooling foods, hydration and less heat-styling all help from the inside.
Can any oil or herb reverse grey hair?
No. Slowing further greying is plausible. Reversing existing grey is not, whatever the packaging says.
Does plucking one grey make more grow?
No, that is a myth. But repeated plucking can damage the follicle, so it is still worth avoiding.
Is stress really a cause?
There is reasonable evidence linking stress to greying via the melanocyte stem cell pool. It is one factor among several, not the whole story.
What should I actually test for?
B12, ferritin and thyroid function. Those three cover most of the reversible causes.

The honest answer about reversing grey
Worth saying plainly before any remedy: no topical herb turns grey hair black again. Greying happens when the melanocytes in a follicle stop producing pigment. Once that has happened in a given follicle, nothing applied to the outside restarts it.
Anyone showing you a before and after of reversed grey is showing you a dye, usually henna or indigo, or a photograph taken in different light.
What is genuinely possible is slowing further greying and looking after the pigmented hair you still have. That is a smaller promise and it happens to be the true one.
Causes worth ruling out first
Premature greying is often genetic, and if a parent greyed early you probably will too. But several reversible causes are common in India and worth a blood test before you spend a year on hair packs.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency. Very common in vegetarian diets and a well documented cause of early greying.
- Low ferritin. Common in menstruating women and linked to both greying and shedding.
- Thyroid dysfunction. Both directions affect hair pigment and texture.
- Smoking. One of the clearest lifestyle associations with premature greying.
If you want to cover it, do it properly
Henna and indigo genuinely colour grey hair and are the safest natural option, but be careful what you buy. So-called black henna often contains PPD, a chemical dye that causes severe reactions and is not henna at all. Pure henna is green-brown powder and stains orange on its own. Anything promising jet black in one step is not pure.
Frequently asked questions
Can grey hair turn black again naturally?
If greying is from stress or nutrient gaps, addressing those can help. Genetic and age-related greying can be slowed and covered, but not truly reversed.
Is henna good for grey hair?
Yes, henna is a chemical-free way to cover greys with warm tones, and it conditions hair at the same time. Mix with indigo for darker shades.
Which herb is best for premature greying?
Bhringraj and amla are the two most trusted Ayurvedic herbs for slowing greys and nourishing follicles.
