Amla Powder Hair Mask — 3 Recipes for Hair Growth, Grey Hair & Shine
Amla is the most reliable herb in the Indian hair cupboard, and the one with the most nonsense attached to it. It will not reverse grey hair. It will do several other things well, and it is worth knowing which is which.
Recipe 1: Hair Growth Powerhouse Mask

- 2 tbsp Amla Powder
- 1 tbsp Bhringraj Powder
- 2 tbsp Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
Mix into a paste. Apply to scalp and hair. Leave 30-45 minutes. Wash with Shikakai Powder. Use weekly for visible growth.
Recipe 2: Anti-Grey Hair Treatment
- 2 tbsp Amla Powder
- 1 tbsp Bhringraj Powder
- Strong black tea (cooled)
Mix with tea. Apply especially on areas with grey hair. Leave 45 minutes. Amla’s Vitamin C boosts melanin production, while bhringraj prevents further greying.
Recipe 3: Shine & Conditioning Rinse
- 2 tbsp Amla Powder
- 500ml warm water
Soak amla in warm water for 2 hours. Strain. Use the amla water as a final rinse after washing hair. Don’t rinse out. Your hair will dry incredibly shiny and soft.
Bonus: Amla Face Pack for Glowing Skin
Amla isn’t just for hair! The Vitamin C makes it excellent for skin too:
- 1 tsp Amla Powder + 1 tbsp yoghurt + 1 tsp honey
- Apply on face for 15 minutes
- Rinse for brighter, Vitamin C-nourished skin
What amla actually does, and what it does not
Amla is genuinely high in vitamin C and polyphenols. Applied to the scalp it supports the collagen structure around the follicle, and it has a long traditional association with slowing greying.
Now the honest part. Amla does not turn grey hair black again. Once a follicle stops producing pigment, no topical herb restarts it. What amla can plausibly do is support the follicles that are still pigmented. Anyone showing you a before and after of reversed grey is showing you a dye.
The effect people actually notice within a few weeks is different and real: hair feels denser and looks glossier. That is largely a cuticle effect rather than new growth, but it is a visible change and it is why amla has stayed in use for centuries.
Work out what is actually happening first
Before you commit to any herb, work out which problem you have, because amla only helps with some of them.
Shedding after illness, childbirth or a crash diet is usually telogen effluvium. It is frightening and it almost always resolves on its own in three to six months. A gentle routine stops you making it worse, but nothing speeds it up much.
A receding hairline or thinning at the crown over years is pattern hair loss, which is hormonal and genetic. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear about what works there, and a hair mask is not it.
Breakage from heat, colour, hard water and tight styles looks like hair loss but is not. Your hair is snapping partway down the shaft. This is the one where amla genuinely shines.
Four mistakes worth avoiding
Common questions
Will amla reverse my grey hair?
No. It may help slow further greying and it conditions well, but no topical herb re-pigments a follicle that has stopped.
Powder or oil?
Oil for scalp massage and retention, powder for weekly masks and rinses. They do different jobs and most people use both.
Does amla dry out hair?
Used alone and too often, yes, it can feel drying. Mixing with coconut oil or curd solves it. Once a week is the sensible ceiling.
Can I take it internally instead?
Eating amla is good for you generally, but do not expect a hair result from it. The topical and dietary effects are not the same thing.
How long until I see anything?
Shine and texture in two to three weeks. Reduced shedding in eight to twelve. Density change takes six months, because that is simply how fast hair grows.
