Skin Care

Glowing skin is not a filter or a ten-step routine. Most of the time it is one honest face pack, used consistently. Here are five Ayurvedic ones for different skin needs, with recipes you can mix tonight.

A face pack works by delivering active ingredients to the surface while gently drawing out oil and dead cells. The trick is matching the pack to your skin, and not leaving it on until it cracks (that dries you out).

1. Kasturi manjal + curd, for tan & even tone

Half a teaspoon of wild turmeric with a spoon of curd. Ten minutes. The gold standard for fading tan and evening skin tone without staining.

2. Orange peel + honey, for dullness & glow

Orange peel powder with a little honey and water. Vitamin C brightens, honey keeps it from over-drying. Great before an event.

3. Ubtan + rose water, for gentle exfoliation

Classic gram-flour ubtan with rose water. Buff gently as you rinse. Softens and brightens in one step.

4. Amla + curd, for tired, stressed skin

Amla is pure antioxidant. Mixed with curd it calms and adds a fresh glow to dull, city skin.

5. Multi-herb glow pack, for a weekly reset

Mix kasturi manjal, orange peel and a pinch of ubtan. The all-rounder when you cannot decide.

How often should I use a face pack?

Two to three times a week is plenty. More can strip and irritate your skin.

Should I leave it on until it dries fully?

No. Rinse while it is still slightly tacky, around 10 minutes. A fully cracked pack pulls moisture out of your skin.

How to pick the right pack for your skin

Most people choose a face pack by what is trending rather than what their skin is doing, which is why results are so inconsistent. The base you mix with matters as much as the powder.

  • Oily or breakout-prone: rose water or a splash of plain water. Skip honey and oil bases, which sit heavy.
  • Dry or mature: raw honey, milk or curd. These offset the mild tightening any powder does on its own.
  • Sensitive or reactive: curd only, ten minutes, once a week. Build up slowly or not at all.
  • Combination: curd across the face, rose water on the T-zone if it feels heavy.
10-15minutes, never longer
1-2xper week
4weeks to judge it
Mix fresh each time and use it within the hour. A pack mixed in the morning and used at night is growing things you do not want on your face. There are no preservatives in a bowl of powder and curd.

Mistakes that undo a good pack

Letting it dry until it cracks. That tightness is water leaving your skin. Rinse while it is still slightly tacky.
Adding lemon juice. The most common addition and a genuinely harmful one. Citrus plus sun causes burns and darker marks.
Using more than one active pack a week. Turmeric, orange peel and scrubs all count. Pick one rhythm and hold it.
Scrubbing it off. Loosen with lukewarm water and lift. Scrubbing dried clay off is how people end up red.

When a pack is the wrong tool

Face packs manage dullness, mild unevenness and texture. They do not treat cystic acne, melasma or rosacea, and using them on inflamed skin usually makes things worse. If you have painful deep spots, symmetrical patches across both cheeks, or persistent redness, that is a dermatologist question. The AAD guidance on acne skin care is a sensible starting point.

Can I use a face pack every day?

No. Once or twice a week. Daily use compromises the barrier, and a compromised barrier looks exactly like the dullness you were treating.

Can I store leftover mixed pack?

No. Mix fresh and use within the hour. There is nothing in it to stop bacteria growing.

Should I moisturise after?

Yes, always, on slightly damp skin. A pack removes some surface oil and the moisturiser puts the barrier back.

How long before I see a difference?

Texture in two weeks, tone in about four. If nothing has changed in eight weeks, the pack is not the answer for that concern.
