Ingredient Deep-Dive
In Ayurveda, bhringraj is called Keshraja โ literally “king of hair.” For thinning, greying or slow-growing hair, it’s the herb to know.
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) has been used for centuries to strengthen roots, slow greying and support new growth. Modern users love it for one reason: it works gently, without the side effects of chemical treatments.
Benefits of bhringraj for hair

- Supports hair growth โ improves blood flow to follicles, encouraging stronger regrowth.
- Reduces hair fall โ nourishes and anchors roots.
- Slows premature greying โ traditionally used to preserve natural colour.
- Calms the scalp โ soothing and mildly antimicrobial, helpful for dandruff.
- Adds shine & softness โ leaves hair visibly healthier.
How to use bhringraj powder
Make a paste
Mix 2โ3 tbsp bhringraj powder with warm water (or curd/aloe for dry hair) into a smooth paste.
Apply root to tip
Section hair and apply to scalp and lengths. Leave 30โ45 minutes.
Rinse well
Wash off with a mild herbal cleanser. Use 1โ2x a week.
Or use bhringraj oil
Prefer oil? Warm and massage into the scalp, leave 1 hour or overnight, then wash.
Does bhringraj reverse grey hair?
No. It is traditionally associated with slowing greying, but once a follicle stops producing pigment nothing topical restarts it.
Powder or oil?
Oil for weekly scalp massage, powder for a mask or added to a wash. Most people who see results use both.
How long until I see anything?
Reduced shedding in eight to twelve weeks. Visible density takes six months, because that is how fast hair grows.
Can I leave it overnight?
You can, but an hour gives most of the benefit without the pillowcase problem or the trapped-sebum risk.

What the evidence actually says about bhringraj
Bhringraj is the closest thing Ayurveda has to a headline act for hair, and unusually for this category there is a plausible mechanism behind it rather than just tradition.
Animal studies and small human work suggest it can extend the anagen phase, the active growing stage of the hair cycle. That is meaningful, because a longer growing phase means hair sheds later and reaches greater length before it does. It is not the same as creating new follicles, and nothing topical does that.
The honest framing: bhringraj is the best-supported herb in the Indian hair cupboard, and the evidence is still modest. Treat it as a good habit rather than a treatment.
Work out what is causing your hair loss first
Sudden shedding after illness, childbirth, surgery or a crash diet is telogen effluvium. Dramatic, frightening, and it resolves on its own in three to six months. Herbs will not speed it up much.
Gradual thinning at the crown or a receding hairline is pattern hair loss, which is hormonal and genetic. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear that minoxidil and finasteride are what work there. Bhringraj supports what you still have.
Breakage from heat, colour, hard water and tight styles looks like loss but is not. This is where a weekly oil and a gentle wash genuinely change things.
Mistakes that waste it
Frequently asked questions
Bhringraj powder or oil, which is better?
Powder gives a deeper scalp treatment as a hair mask; oil is easier for regular massage. Many people use oil twice weekly and a powder mask once a week.
Can bhringraj reverse grey hair?
It can help slow premature greying and preserve natural colour with consistent use, but it won’t reverse genetic or age-related greying.
Does bhringraj have side effects?
It’s very well tolerated. Do a patch test first if you have a sensitive scalp.
