Natural Henna Hair Colour Recipes — How to Get Every Shade from Copper to Brown
Chemical hair dyes damage your hair with every application. Natural henna does the opposite — it colours AND conditions your hair simultaneously. Here’s your complete guide to getting the exact shade you want using Good Origins Henna Powder.
Before You Start: Henna Basics
- Henna alone gives copper-red colour on dark hair, more vibrant on light/grey hair
- To get darker shades, you mix henna with other natural ingredients
- Always use pure henna without chemicals — our henna is triple-sifted homegrown henna (Lawsonia inermis)
- Colour develops over 48 hours — don’t judge the final shade on Day 1
Recipe 1: Classic Copper-Red
What you get: Beautiful copper highlights on dark hair, vibrant red-orange on grey/white hair
- 4 tablespoons Henna Powder
- Warm water (enough to make yoghurt-like consistency)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Method: Mix henna with warm water and lemon juice. Let the paste rest for 6-8 hours (or overnight) for maximum dye release. Apply from roots to tips. Wrap hair in a shower cap. Leave for 2-3 hours. Rinse with water only — no shampoo for 24 hours.
Recipe 2: Reddish Brown
What you get: Warm reddish-brown that’s more subtle than pure henna
- 3 tablespoons Henna Powder
- 1 tablespoon Amla Powder
- Strong black tea (instead of water)
Method: Brew strong black tea, let it cool. Mix henna and amla powder with the tea. Rest for 4-6 hours. Apply and leave for 2-3 hours. Rinse.
Why it works: Amla darkens henna’s natural colour, and black tea tannins add depth. The result is a rich, warm reddish-brown.
Recipe 3: Dark Brown (For Grey Coverage)
What you get: Natural-looking dark brown that covers greys beautifully
- 3 tablespoons Henna Powder
- 2 tablespoons Bhringraj Powder
- 1 tablespoon Amla Powder
- Strong coffee (instead of water)
Method: Mix all powders with strong brewed coffee. Rest for 4-6 hours. Apply generously to cover all grey hairs. Leave for 3-4 hours for maximum coverage. Rinse.
Why it works: Bhringraj darkens the overall shade significantly while also promoting hair growth. Coffee adds brown tones. Amla provides conditioning and colour depth.
Recipe 4: Deep Burgundy
What you get: Rich, wine-coloured tones
- 4 tablespoons Henna Powder
- Warm beetroot juice (instead of water)
- 1 tablespoon hibiscus powder (optional)
Method: Mix henna with beetroot juice. Rest for 6 hours. Apply and leave for 3 hours. Rinse.
Application Tips for Best Results
- Always apply on clean, dry hair (wash with Shikakai Powder the day before)
- Apply coconut oil on your hairline and ears to prevent skin staining
- Use an old towel — henna stains fabric
- Cover with shower cap + warm towel for deeper colour
- No shampoo for 24-48 hours after application
- Colour deepens over 48 hours, so wait before judging
- Reapply every 3-4 weeks for roots
